Erik followed me into the dark bedroom. The sound of the door closing behind him sent a delightful, but anxiety-inducing shiver up my spine.

There wasn’t much light in the room, only what came in with the infrequent flashes of lightning. After my eyes adjusted, I could see the dresser, the bed… Erik inching toward me.

I sat on the edge of the bed and hugged myself. Erik stopped, perhaps able to sense something was bothering me.

“Everything okay?” he asked.

“Yeah,” I lied, forcing a smile onto my face he couldn’t possibly see.

Erik rested his hand on my thigh, and I stiffened. “No, you’re not. Do you want to talk about it?”

“No. Not really,” I muttered.

“Should we talk about it?” Erik asked.

I shrugged as I chewed on my cheek. The last thing I wanted to talk to Erik about was what an abomination I was. It wasn’t like it was a secret, though. He could see me.

I tried to push the negative thoughts from my mind and exhaled as I turned to him. My eyes closed as I inched closer, searching for his lips.

“Hold up,” Erik said, lightly touching my shoulder.

My eyes popped open. A flash of lightning reflected in his pupils and sparkled through his irises.

“Is it something I did?” Erik asked. “I want to make sure we’re in a good place before doing anything. It’s important to me that you feel safe and comfortable with me.”

“Okay.” It was the only word I could think to say.

His head tilted. “What’s going on, Mel. You can talk to me.”

“Sam’s just been in a mood,” I said. “I don’t know how to act around her anymore.”

“You’re best friends,” Erik said, taking my hand in his. “You’ll figure it out.”

I nodded, but wasn’t sure if he could see my head moving. “Yeah. I’m sure we will.”

“Something tells me that’s not what’s on your mind,” Erik said.

He already knew me well enough to know when there was something I was holding inside. It was nice to have that, but also, sometimes, I’d rather just keep some things to myself.

“It’s nothing,” I said, leaning toward him again.

“Mel,” he said. “If you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine. We can just go to bed, and you can tell me when you’re ready.”

“What if I’m never ready?” I asked.

Erik stroked the back of my hand. “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.” He exhaled slowly. “So, we going to talk or we going to sleep?”

I pulled my hand from him and buried my face in my hands. Erik stood, taking it as a sign that I didn’t want to talk.

“Wait, no,” I said, grabbing his hand. I looked up into his sparkling eyes. “I saw myself in the mirror.”

“And?”

I couldn’t see his expression, but I knew by his tone he was confused. I stood and pressed my face to his chest.

“I don’t look very healthy. I’m skin and bones.”

He wrapped his arms around me.

“I look like a monster,” I mumbled.

“You do not,” Erik said. “We’re all dehydrated, and depleted, and just worn down.
